'This Christmas' gets an 'American Idol'-style promo campaign

Christmas came early to the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza this year.

On a sunny, 75-degree day in October, dozens of aspiring stars from across the Southland gathered there to raise their voices in song, competing in an "American Idol"-inspired contest.

Each was asked to perform 60 seconds from either "Silent Night" or the Donny Hathaway R&B favorite "This Christmas" before a panel of "celebrity judges."

Even if the songs were at odds with the spirit of a season defined by jack-o'-lanterns and artificial cobwebs, they were sung in the service of a yuletide hallmark that arrives each year as faithfully as old Saint Nick: a Christmas movie.

The competition was actually part of a multi-platform promotional campaign for the upbeat family comedy "This Christmas," which hits theaters Nov. 21 and stars teenage R&B superstar Chris Brown, Regina King and Delroy Lindo. Similar competitions took place in 34 other cities across the country, and it was 18-year-old Atlanta native Antenica N. Smith who took home the top prize. Smith was chosen via online poll at AOL's Black Voices portal -- where clips of the contestants' performances can be viewed -- and will sing live tonight on Black Entertainment Television's "106 & Park," a special also intended to hype "This Christmas." The newcomer will share the stage with none other than pop prince Brown.

Winning was only of secondary concern to Tiara Edwards, 19, who heard about the contest on the radio early last month and, on a whim, drove from Lancaster in an eye-popping minidress to perform her song standing in front of a "This Christmas" one sheet.

"I want to take Chris Brown out on a date!" Edwards said. "I'll even pay.

"If I don't win, I'll probably see the movie anyways."

Screen Gems has become moviedom's foremost practitioner of the contest-promo gambit.

Sony's scrappy genre division successfully staged fan competitions in conjunction with its previous urban youth-oriented films, the teen dance drama "You Got Served," which topped the box office in its 2004 weekend debut and the collegiate dance drama "Stomp the Yard," which took the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend in January.

Marc Weinstock, Screen Gems' executive vice president of marketing, explained the way such contests virally generate publicity without costing big advertising bucks.

"When winners are selected, those markets see grassroots efforts geared to help a local represent [his or her] city," Weinstock said. "Those winners get on local radio, print and TV. And that translates into people seeing the movie. It's branding six weeks before the open."

Weinstock added that Christmas movies have historically benefited from strong word of mouth -- the cornerstone of the marketing push for '"This Christmas."

"There are so many things we love about contests," he said. "They bring the movies to fans in a way that's not advertising. It gets them excited about the talent. And music is a big part of the backdrop in this movie -- Chris Brown's character sings two amazing songs -- so it was concept-related. Most contests are like, 'Hey, win a trip to Washington D.C.' "

"This Christmas" cast member Lauren London, who plays a conflicted college student home for the holidays in the film, was roped into judging the singing challenge at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. She was most struck by contestants' palpable mix of eagerness and apprehension -- their fervent desire to get into Brown's mix.

"It seems like it's a big thing for them," London said. "I saw people whose hands were shaking. They didn't know where to look. Chris Brown is so hot right now, he has that effect on people."

Carrie Rides Carnival Straight to No. 1

Carrie Underwood's new single might be "So Small," but her new album is big, big, big!

With the 41st Country Music Awards less than a week away, several country artists debuted new albums, but it was the season-four American Idol champ who ultimately ruled the rodeo, selling 527,000 copies of Carnival Ride, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers released today.

In addition to topping the charts, Underwood scored the best first-week sales of any female artist in 2007. Norah Jones' Not Too Late held the previous mark with 405,000 during its opening week back in February. Carnival Ride is the year's sixth-best bow overall, following albums by Kanye West, 50 Cent, Linkin Park, the High School Musical 2 cast and Rascal Flatts.

Carnival Ride also makes Underwood the first American Idol champ to top the charts since Ruben Studdard's Soulful debut four years ago. Follow-up albums by Kelly Clarkson and Studdard, the only other champs to top the chart, failed to repeat. Likewise, debut albums by Fantasia and Taylor Hicks never made it to the top, entering the charts at eight and two, respectively. In fact, Chris Daughtry, the fourth-place finisher from season five, is the only other former contestant to hit number one in recent years, though season-six champ Jordin Sparks will get her chance Nov. 20, when her self-titled debut drops.

Meanwhile, Underwood's debut disc, Some Hearts, remains in the Billboard 200. The 2005 album, which debuted at number two, entered its 102nd week at 60, up 21 spots, bringing its two-year tally to nearly 6 million.

It was a busy week with six top 10 debuts, enough to send last week's chart-topper, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Magic, down 11 spots to number 12.

Among the other new debuts, the odd coupling of Zeppelin rocker Robert Plant and bluegrass songbird Alison Krauss was good enough for a second-place debut as Raising Sand sold 112,000 copies for the week ended Sunday. Another country crooner, Gary Allan, sold 69,000 copies of Living Hard to follow at three.

Remarkably, this is the first time in Billboard 200 history that three country albums debuted in the top three spots.

A trio of rock releases made up the rest of the top 10 bows. System of a Down screamer Serj Tankian sold 66,000 copies of his solo album Elect the Dead for a number four finish. Sci-fi prog-rockers Coheed & Cambria followed at six, selling 62,000 copies of No World for Tomorrow. Seether, powered by the top 10 rock hit "Fake It," nabbed the nine spot, moving 62,000 copies of Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces.

The week's top 10 holdovers were Josh Groban's Noël at five, Kid Rock's Rock N Roll Jesus at seven, Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good at eight and the High School Musical 2 soundtrack at 10. With the exception of Groban, each of these albums originally debuted at number one.

A pair of rockers just missed the top 10. Neil Young's Chrome Dreams II sold nearly 54,000 copies at 11. Colombian superstar Juanes, who's often called the Latin Bono for his exceptional humanitarian efforts, sold 47,000 of La Vida...Es un Ratico at 13.

Further down the chart, Hurricane Chris' 5150 Ratchet sold 26,000 copies at 24, while Say Anything's In Defense of the Genre debuted at 27, with 25,000.

Other noteworthy entries included Ryan Adams & the Cardinals' Follow the Lights EP at 40, Dwight Yoakam's Dwight Sings Buck at 42, Steven Curtis Chapman's This Moment at 47, Shooter Jennings' The Wolf at 52, Rob Zombie's Zombie Live at 57, Ween's La Cucaracha at 69 and Cobra Starship's Viva La Cobra! at 80.

Overall, there was a 5 percent uptick from last week's glacial sales, though the figures were still down 17 percent compared to the same week in 2006.

Here's a recap of the Top 10 albums:

1. Carnival Ride, Carrie Underwood
2. Raising Sand, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
3. Living Hard, Gary Allan
4. Elect the Dead, Serj Tankian
5. Noël, Josh Groban
6. No World for Tomorrow, Coheed & Cambria
7. Rock N Roll Jesus, Kid Rock
8. Still Feels Good, Rascal Flatts
9. Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, Seether
10. High School Musical 2 soundtrack, various

American Idol Winners

The sixth season of American Idol has finished up and we have a new American Idol winner joining the ranks. Jordin Sparks dazzled America and scored the title over cutie Blake Lewis. Check out the goods on the current and past American Idols!

American Idol: Season Six - Jordin Sparks
Birthdate: December 22, 1989
Birthplace: Staten Island, New York
Jordin Sparks may be the youngest AI winner to date, but she has a voice that contradicts her age and musical experience beyond her years. Jordin has been watching American Idol since she was 12, and released an independent EP when she was just 13 years old. So now that she's reached the ripe old age of 17, she's ready to be an Idol!
American Idol: Season Five - Taylor Hicks
Birthdate: January 24, 1977
Birthplace: Birmingham, Alabama
Taylor Hicks brought a sound as unusual as his grayer-than-average look to American Idol. His Alabama upbringing gives his sound a soulfulness that his fans love. Taylor's been singing since he could crawl and had already been performing at various venues around the US since he left university. He has even already put out an album called Under the Radar. Taylor tried to audition for American Idol at its Memphis audition but that was cancelled after Hurricane Katrina so he went to the Vegas one instead. Taylor's first post-Idol

album (called - what else - Taylor Hicks) was dropped in 2006. American Idol: Season 4 - Carrie Underwood
Birthdate: March 9, 1983
Birthplace: Checotah, Oklahoma
The contestants from season four of American Idol were whittled down and the winner was Carrie Underwood! This country crooner wowed America week after week with her powerful voice. Before driving for seven hours to audition in St. Louis, Carrie was enrolled in college taking Mass Communications. Carrie's first single, Inside Your Heaven, debuted at number one in the charts. Her second single, Jesus Take the Wheel, peaked at number one in the country charts and her full album, Some Hearts hit shelves in November 2005.
American Idol: Season 3 - Fantasia Barrino
Birthdate: June 30, 1984
Birthplace: High Point, NC
Fantasia Barrino brought a new flavor to American Idol during season three. Her raspy voice set her apart from the thousands of other contestants she was up against. Since her win Fantasia has released her first album, Free Yourself. There are some pretty big appearances on this disc - Missy Elliot is featured on the track Selfish! Fantasia published her memoir in late-2005 called Life is Not a Fairy Tale and her second album, Fantasia, hit shelves in late 2006. She's currently starring in the Broadway musical The Color Purple, produced by Oprah Winfrey.
American Idol: Season 2 - Ruben
Courtesy of RCA
Studdard
Birthdate: September 12, 1978
Birthplace: Birmingham, Alabama
Real Name: Christopher Ruben Studdard
Before American Idol, Ruben Studdard was a voice major at Alabama A&M University. He also performed with his bands, Just A Few Cats and God's Gifts. Ruben auditioned for American Idol in Nashville, Tennessee and all three judges said they got goosebumps when he sang. Later, guest judge Gladys Knight nicknamed him The Velvet Teddy Bear. Ruben beat Clay Aiken by 134,400 votes in the season two American Idol finale. He has since released two albums, Soulful and I Need an Angel. His third album, The Return, met with poor sales in 2006.
American Idol: Season 1 - Kelly Clarkson
Birthdate: April 24, 1982
Birthplace: Burleson, Texas
Kelly has really come a long way since her big win on American Idol. The competition launched her into the spotlight and her first disc, Thankful, made a huge splash. Tracks like Miss Independent and Beautiful Disaster became instant summer anthems. Critics may have thought that Kelly would fade out fast, but with the release of Breakaway, Kelly Clarkson has proved that she has real staying power in the industry. Kelly's third album, My December, drops in June 2007.

American Idol does not have a ranking for the 2001-2002 season because it aired in the summer of 2002. If it had aired within the official 2001-2002 U.S. television season, the Wednesday results show would have ranked #25 and the Tuesday performance show would have ranked #30, assuming it would have had the same rating as it did in the summer.

American Idol has bucked the trend of most successful television programs, past and present, by growing in audience numbers in its fifth season. According to the overnight ratings for May 24, 2006, an average of 42.94 million viewers tuned in to the final half-hour of the fifth season finale when Taylor Hicks was announced as the 2006 American Idol.

Season Six: On the season finale of the sixth season, the ratings of American Idol saw a drop of 19 percent from last year, when Taylor Hicks was crowned as the 2006 Idol. However, the results are preliminary as the ratings were measured between 8pm-10pm. Ratings of the season finale peaked at 34.9 million viewers at 10pm, just five minutes before Jordin Sparks was declared the winner of Idol.

American Idol controversy

Main article: American Idol controversy
Fans and critics alike were stunned at Melinda Doolittle's departure. Simon Cowell admitted that the sixth season's crown should have rightfully gone to Melinda.Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe responded, noting that "[Idol producers] were so engrossed with the mentors and didn't really focus on the Melinda Doolittles of the show". Lythgoe also produces So You Think You Can Dance, and has noted that the dance program gives background information about its contestants, while American Idol will focus more on its big name celebrity mentors, such as Tony Bennett, Gwen Stefani, and Jennifer Lopez.
American Idol has come under fire for maintaining what some claim to be total control of the careers of the winners of the contest. Former co-host Brian Dunkleman referred to the show as "owning" the winning contestants, noting that winners sign contracts to only record with companies owned by the show's producers and to allow related agencies to manage their careers.
Former contestant Corey Clark told reporters in April 2005 that he and Idol judge Paula Abdul had a "secret affair" prompting an investigation by external counsel hired by Fox, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment. The 600-hour investigation spanning three months cleared Abdul of all charges levied by Clark.
During season three, controversy arose at the poor showing during the semi-finals of three highly praised African American contestants, Jennifer Hudson, LaToya London and Fantasia Barrino - collectively known during that season as the 'Three Divas'. After the surprise elimination of Hudson, Sir Elton John, who was a guest judge for that season criticized the vote as 'incredibly racist' in a press conference. The elimination of both Hudson and London relatively early in the competition has been pointed out as a classic demonstration of vote splitting in the American idol vote.Barrino would eventually go on to win the competition.
Since the 2004 season, American Idol producers have battled online community services such as the websites DialIdol.com, Worldsentiment.com, and VotefortheWorst.com. DialIdol predicts which contestants may be voted off or are in danger of being voted off based on the percentage of times an automatic dialer encounters a busy signal for each contestant; Worldsentiment uses very large samplings and algorithms to predict the outcome of the vote-off; and VotefortheWorst exhorts viewers to vote for what the site deems to be the worst contestant, rather than the best. Some in the media have implied that Las Vegas odds makers exert behind-the-scenes influence in protecting the services.
A series of provocative photos surfaced on the Internet of Season 6 Top 24 Contestant Antonella Barba.
According to the Howard 100 News LaKisha Jones's departure (Season 6) was not because of America's vote, but rather a predetermined outcome. Their source claims that travel arrangements for LaKisha to return home were made prior to the start of the May 8, 2007 performance show, well before the phone lines were opened. The source also claims that a significant sized crew was sent to Flint, Michigan for reaction shots, however crews were not sent to the remaining contestants' home towns.

American Idol Media sponsorship

American Idol is often noted for advertising its sponsors during the show's runtime. Being the number one rated show in the United States, it costs around $705,000 for a 30-second commercial.

Coca-Cola is a major sponsor in the U.S., and all the judges, hosts, and contestants are seen consuming beverages out of cups bearing the Coca-Cola logo, while contestants and host Ryan Seacrest gathering for a Keeping it Real segment between songs in the Coca-Cola Red Room, the show's equivalent to the traditional green room. (During rebroadcast on ITV in the UK, the Coca-Cola logo is obscured in the shots.) In seasons 1 through 4, after every Wednesday results show, the remaining contestants and host meet in the Coca-Cola Red Room to discuss next week's theme; the footage of this meeting is shown at the start of the following Tuesday's performance show.

Text voting is made possible by AT&T Mobility, formerly Cingular Wireless. It was provided by AT&T Wireless Services before Cingular acquired that company.

Kellogg and Pop-Tarts are also two major sponsors, especially of the cast tour that follows the end of every season.

Products from the Ford Motor Company also receive prominent product placement; contestants appear in Ford commercials on the results shows, and the final two of Seasons 4, 5 and 6 each won free Mustangs. Previous contestants Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Hicks have also been tapped to do commercials for Ford. Also, in the top 24's studio, in the red room there is a glass table with a Ford tire inside of it. The camera routinely captures the logo

Contestants will occasionally don Old Navy clothing during performances, and celebrity stylist Steven Cojocaru appeared in two previous seasons to assist contestants with picking out wardrobe pieces from Old Navy. Clairol hair care products also sponsors the show, with contestants usually getting Clairol-guided hair makeovers after the first two or three episodes during the round of 12.

The show's marketing reach is not limited to the hours of broadcast. Edy's Icecream is tapping into the buzz with a campaign to have people vote for their favorite 'Idol' inspired Ice Cream.

19 Entertainment, American Idol's parent company, agreed to pay the State of New York a $5,000 fine for breaking the state's child labor laws earlier

19 Entertainment, American Idol's parent company, agreed to pay the State of New York a $5,000 fine for breaking the state's child labor laws earlier this summer. American Idol singers Jordin Sparks and Sanjaya Malakar, both of whom are under 21, were cited. Neither Malakar or Sparks had acquired the proper work permits. The American Idol tour held four dates in the State of New York in August and September. 19 Entertainment was held totally responsible, and there should be further trouble for the singers or 19 Entertainment.

Kid Rock Proclaims "American Idol Sucks"

In a recent interview with Blender Magazine, Kid Rock recently proclaimed that "American Idol sucks." Hardly an original sentiment, at least Kid Rock's argument regarding Idol's deficiencies is well-thought out and articulate. Oh wait, it's not. That wasn't Mr. Rock's full quote. He continued, explaining: "I think they should allow songwriters in. Someone singing a song they wrote – there's nothing more powerful. But whatever, they're doing fine; they don't need me, and I don't need them." I'm pretty sure that quote makes very little sense, but perhaps Rock just lives and thinks on a higher plane of existence than the rest of us.

American Idol: Jordin Sparks Almost Done with Debut Album

Jordin Sparks has had a crazy past nine months. The seventeen year old became the youngest winner in American Idol history. She just finished up the long and grueling American Idol tour, all the while working on her debut album. Sparks' first album, which she has been working on when there's been time throughout the summer, will be released on November 17. Now that the Idol tour is finished, Jordin is in Los Angeles, focused completely on finishing her album in time.

Dolly Parton Too Nice to be Judge on 'American Idol'

Legendary country singer and flotation device Dolly Parton recently declined an invitation to act as guest judge on FOX's American Idol. The reason? She's too nice. American Idol will apparently be producing an episode next season that will pay tribute to the music of Dolly Parton. She was asked by FOX to help judge the singers on this episode, but Parton politely declined. Dolly said, "I won't be a judge. I couldn't do that. I can't tell people they aren't doing a good job even if they ask me. To tell someone if they're good or bad, or if they suck isn't me."

American Idol: Lakisha Jones Joins Cast of 'The Color Purple' on Broadway

Lakisha Jones was the early favorite to win it all on last season of American Idol. That didn't happen, but Jones advanced far in the season and constantly wowed audiences with her monstrous voice. Now, she'll get a chance to showcase that voice on Broadway. The producers of The Color Purple recently announced that Lakisha will be joining the cast on January 9. She will play the role of Church Soloist on all evening shows and will play the bigger role of Sofia during matinées.

American Idol - Sanjaya Malakar Talks About His Upcoming Album

Despite his detractors, Sanjaya Malakar is still determined to pursue his music career. After participating in the American Idols Live! Tour 2007, a summer concert tour which ended yesterday, the 18-year-old former American Idol finalist will now take on his first album.

Malakar, who gained national attention on American Idol season 6 by advancing to the 7th place with public votes despite many criticisms, is eager to chase his musical passion and tap on other opportunities that come along his way.

Emmys 2007: How Did American Idol's Ryan Seacrest Handle the Hosting Duties?

There was a fair amount of skepticism regarding FOX's choice to hand over the Emmy hosting reigns to American Idol host and friend of the Teeny-bopper Ryan Seacrest this year. There was no controversy, per se, because it's really not that big of a deal. It's not like Seacrest's Emmy appointment was out of nowhere, either. FOX has been known to shamelessly flog its own assets and as the best host on the FOX network, it was wholly reasonable that he host a major award show. The only problem was that the trend for major awards shows has been to hand over hosting duties to comedians. Ryan Seacrest is no comedian.

American Idol: Jennifer Hudson Signs on for 'Sex and the City' Movie

Jennifer Hudson, former American Idol contestant and Academy Award winner for her work in Dreamgirls, has signed for a supporting role in the upcoming Sex and the City film. The long in the making movie, which was reliant on all four ladies (Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis) agreeing to go through with the project. Hudson will play Sarah Jessica Parker's assistant in the film.

There's no word yet on just how big the part of the assistant is, but for Jennifer Hudson to choose it as one of her first post-Oscar roles, you'd have to assume it's a somewhat significant role. The problem is, it doesn't sound like one. Is she going to play the “sassy assistant” or is she going to play the “shy assistant”? Are there any others? I'm a Jennifer Hudson fan, and thought she was remarkably good in Dreamgirls, so I hope it's a solid part.

'American Idol' Wins First Ever Emmy

The Creative Emmy Awards were presented this past weekend. These are the less sexy awards that are deemed not important enough to televise during the actual Primetime Emmy Awards. But, they are Emmys nonetheless. Prior to this weekend, American Idol had been in the midst of Emmy Award futility, the likes of which hasn't been seen since Newhart, which went 25 nominations without a win. Idol has been nominated 21 times in a variety of categories with zero victories. That's tough to swallow. Finally, this past weekend, American Idol won its very first Emmy, thanks in part to Celine Dion and Elvis Presley. American Idol won the Emmy for Outstanding Technical Direction for its "Idol Gives Back" fundraising special, which included a duet between Celine Dion and a computer illusion of Elvis Presley.

American Idol: 2007 Tour Ticket Sales Down

The top ten finalists from American Idol's sixth season embarked on the Idols Live Tour in the beginning of July with the expectation that they would be welcomed with enthusiasm as previous Idol tours. For some reason, this isn't happening. Attendance on the current American Idol tour is down a striking amount. The combination of Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, and Sanjaya Malakar appeared poised for a successful tour. Unfortunately, through thirty concerts, there have been exactly zero (0) sellouts, which is shocking.

American Idol: Kelly Clarkson Announces Downsized Fall Tour

Kelly Clarkson had originally scheduled a monster of a summer tour where she would play arenas and large venues across the country. Poor ticket sales and lukewarm reception to her newest album, My December, prompted Clarkson and her team to cancel those summer tour plans. Since that time, Clarkson has ended her feud with Clive Davis and fired her manager for mis-reading fan interest in a tour. Now, finally, Kelly Clarkson fans no longer have to worry: the former American Idol champion has announced a 23-date Fall tour that will kick off at the Turning Stone Casino in New York on October 10 and end December 3, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

American Idol: Champion Jordin Sparks Pledges Vow of Chastity

You know you're famous when a vow of chastity makes the news. Perhaps I am perpetuating the problem, that is, if you consider this type of news a problem. Anyway, American Idol champion Jordin Sparks recently stated in an interview that she would wait until marriage before having sex. She said the choice was borne out of a conversation she had with her parents when she was 13-years-old. Sparks explained, “My parents gave me a purity ring and talked to me about waiting until I'm married to have sex. It wasn't forced; it just made perfect sense. It's going to be awesome to say to my husband that I waited my whole life for him.”

American Idol Runner-Up Blake Lewis Signs Record Deal with Arista

Blake Lewis, runner-up on last season's American Idol, has signed his first record deal. The beat-boxing specialist from Bothell, Washington has inked a deal with Clive Davis's Artista record label and will release an album later this year. Lewis was a surprise finalist on this past season of American Idol and while he was destined to lose to the safer and less unusual Jordin Sparks, he gained a loyal base of fans during his time on Idol.

It's being mongered in a few places that the album is provisionally titled “Audio Daydream (ADD)”, but who knows whether that's the truth. Earlier this summer, Lewis explained what fans can expect from his debut. "It's your favorite '80s mix tape - very inspired by Michael Jackson, Prince, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the Cure. It's all over the map, really - very influenced by '80s hip-hop, old school breaks, whatever."

Simon Cowell to Quit 'American Idol'...In Three Years

A few days back, Simon Cowell announced that after the 2010 season of American Idol, he will leave the show that made him famous. Cowell says that he will turn his attentions to his music and television companies, and even begin making movies. Cowell said, “I run a record label, I run a TV company, we're making movies now - I love that part of my life. I probably get more satisfaction from making a show than being on a show.”

The decision to do only three more seasons of American Idol isn't an arbitrary one: he has three more left on his contract. While this may be a disappointment to fans of Idol, it's also probably a good thing. No one likes to hold on to a high-profile gig for too long, especially when it happens to be a gig on the biggest show in television history. This does bring up some interesting questions. Can Idol survive without Simon Cowell? And, will Idol last past 10 seasons anyway?

Sabrina Sloan and Sundance team up for CD duet

You know there's life after American Idol when Sundance Head and Sabrina Sloan team up for a duet. This took place last July.

Sundance was the guy who got the boot when it came down to the wire between him and Sanjaya for the elimination on March 8, 2007.

Sanjaya's supporters proved too vociferous and too strong at that point and Sundance rode into the sunset.

But it wasn't the end for Sundance because recently he signed up with Universal Music.

Sundance made the headlines during the Idol auditions when Simon Cowell commented that "he blew Taylor Hicks out of the park" with his vocals.

I don't think Hicks forgot that remark all too soon. Anyway, Sundance went on to sing Mustang Sally and Nights in White Satin in later rounds and carved his name on the walls of American Idol.

For a while back there, 28-year-old Sundance was a serious contender for the Idol finals but he fell short by one week entering into the finals.

For Sabrina Sloan, life hasn't exactly been on the slow lane since she left the halls of American Idol.

This Idol semi-finalist caught the attention of Jolene Cherry, vice-president of Universal Motown which convinced her that she would sound great in a duet with Sundance.

In fact, Motown tracked her down soon after her elimination in the sixth season.

Initially, Sabrina was sceptical that this duet project will work out but after some soul-searching and consultation with her family, she decided to give it her best shot.

However, Sabrina was realistic enough to realise that her duet with Sundance is not going to be another one of those "Peaches and Herb" pairing.

Long after the Idol Season 6 was over, a lot of people still remember Sabrina's stirring rendition of Amazing Grace in her April Idol performance.

We wish both Sundance and Sabrina all the best in their future endeavours. Good things always come to those who work hard at their careers.

Lakisha goes Broadway, Chris Sligh plays a tune

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! All Lakisha Jones fans, take note. Your powerhouse Lakisha has landed herself a role in the Broadway play of The Color Purple.

Word on the Street is she will be making her stage appearance in January 2008.

The other Idol who also happens to be involved in Color Purple currently is Fantasia Barrino. Fantasia's contract in the play will come to a close on Jan 6, 2008.

I suppose that's when Lakisha takes over. Lakisha will play the role of Sofia. In fact, she will singing the play's opening number "Mysterious Ways."

In case, some of you may have forgotten, Lakisha was placed fourth in American idol Season 6. Many had expected her to make it to the last three but fate decided otherwise.

As for The Color Purple, the other big names involved are Chaka Khan and gospel singer BeBe Winans.

Lakisha is also presently working hard on her first album.

In the other development, Chris Sligh and his band Half Past Forever released their album Take A Chance On Something Beautiful in July.

The album has 17 songs and good old Chris had a hand in writing all or most of the songs.

Chris was knocked out of the American Idol competition on March 28, 2007 and was placed in the 10th position. Not bad for a guy for whom not many thought would not make it to the last 10.

Chris is the son of two Baptist missionaries and he is the oldest of three boys in the family.

He's a very good guitarist and currently, he's doing better than okay. That's what the American Idol does for a contestant.

Participation in America's hottest show tends to boost a person's career in a major way.

Melinda does her bit for Zambia

THIS story is a bit of an old news item but I feel it still bears recounting since it's my favourite Idol 2007 contestant, Melinda Doolittle.

Towards the end of last June, after American Idol Season 6 came to its conclusion, Melinda visited Africa for the first time.

It was part of the Network's Idol Gives Back project. Melinda was part of the group that went to Zambia to distribute bed nets to those who sorely needed them.

It was a four-day trip and the proceeds from the Idol Gives Back telethon proceeds were used to buy 500,000 bed nets for those Zambians who were in danger of suffering from malaria.

Melinda was beside herself with joy as she toured the country with some people who really cared for these needy people. It is believed that Melinda sang Amazing Grace to an audience while she was there.

Here's what she has to say about her trip to Zambia:

"Just $10 buys a bed net, which can protect a family for up to five years,” she says of one of the ways donations are used. “For the children of Africa, it can be the difference between life and death. I hope Idol fans begin to realize how easy it is to prevent malaria and how much of a difference even a small donation can make."

Well said, Melinda. That's my girl!

Simon Cowell is leaving the American Idol ....

There's a bit of news lurking around the American Idol neighbourhood that Simon Cowell is quitting the show. Hold it! Hold it! The punchline is YES! but in three years' time when Cowell hits the big 50.

I believe, as many others do, he's 47 right now. Simon told people at London's Mirror that there will come a time when people in general will be sick and tired of him, and that will come 36 months from now.

Apparently, he is shutting his trap in front of the camera for good and concentrate on his TV and music business. That fateful year is 2010.

Simon is quite upfront about the whole affair. He told The Mirror:
"I have three more seasons under contract with American Idol and that will be it. And it will probably come at the same time in the UK.

I am contracted for another two or three seasons in Britain and I think by that point the public will be sick to death of me anyway and it will be time to go."

In other words, he will be giving up American Idol and Britain's X-Factor show. For a person who is worth about 100 million pounds, that is an easy decision. He obviously has greener fields to conquer.

Simon leapt into the bright limelight back in 2001 when he surfaced to capture the world's attention in UK's Pop Idol.

Since then, he has not looked back, even though those who were at the receiving end of his verbal barbs stared daggers at him all the time.

To show that he meant what he had said, Simon put on record that "I run a record label, I run a TV company, we're making movies now - I love that part of my life.

I probably get more satisfaction from making a show than being on a show.

"I've been lucky, but I also know when not to outstay my welcome."

Good for you, old chap. Well, may be not that old but certainly jolly good and smart, too!
Lately, Simon Cowell has been singing praises of third season X-Factor winner Leona Lewis.

Miss Lewis is a former waitress but Simon is so impressed with her that he has already proclaimed that she will be the most successful of her two X-Factor predecessors Steve Brookstein and Shayne Ward.

I know many of you out there don't know who this Leona Lewis is. That's because X-Factor has not shown up in most of our shores.

Perhaps it will but that depends on local TV networks and their budgets.

For a TV show that has attracted nearly 400,000 people (375,00 to be exact) over four years, it is certainly surprising that many of us in Malaysia have not heard of it.

But never mind, Simon is still crying all the way to his banks!

Just in case, you think may be, just may be that Simon could be settling down in the years to come - never fear - NEVER is the word.

According to Simon, he has just bought his girlfriend Terri Seymour a Jaguar. Much better than a lousy bunch of flowers, in his words.

Yes, yes, he's not the romantic kind but who cares, a Jag lasts longer than a bouquet. Don't you agree?

American Idol Judges

On Thursday morning’s “The View,” Rosie O’Donnell dropped a bomb on “American Idol” and attacked America’s three favorite judges.

“If you keep serving people crap, they’re eventually going to think it’s a meal,” Rosie touted. “Three millionaires… one probably intoxicated. So sad.”

Rosie’s new war came the morning after an incredible 32 million people tuned in as Simon, Randy and Paula struggled in Seattle, taking aim at wannabes like Kenneth Briggs.

“You look like one of those creatures in the jungle with those massive eyes, what are they called? Bush baby,” Simon told the “Idol” hopeful.

“To make fun of someone’s physical appearance, is this what America thinks is entertainment?” Rosie challenged.

Only “Extra” had a backstage “View” pass with Thursday’s guest host, “Idol’s” season five sweetheart Kellie Pickler, who found herself caught in the “A.I.” crossfire.

Kellie came to the judges’ defense, insisting, “We all knew when we got in line for ‘American Idol’ there was a chance we could be embarrassed on national TV and humiliate ourselves; we knew that.”

Meanwhile, as Rosie ripped apart the “Idol” judges, you better believe that Donald Trump wanted in on the action too, and “Extra” has it!

“She shouldn’t be going after Simon, and she shouldn’t be going after anybody,” The Donald said. “Rosie is a mess.”

While Rosie targets the “Idol” judges, it seems Paula and Ryan are involved in a war of their own. On Ryan’s L.A. radio show, Paula attacked Ryan for not defending her behavior when he appeared on “The Tonight Show.”

“Look, I don’t look in their cups to see what’s sitting before them on that table,” Ryan told Jay Leno.

Paula attacked Ryan on the Los Angeles airwaves, as she inquired about his sit down with Leno.

“You know darn well there’s nothing in any of our Coca-Cola cups, and you know darn well I’ve never gone out drinking,” she snapped.

“I really feel like I try to keep the peace with you,” he then told Paula, who accepted his apology, saying, “I love you.”

But how long will the “Idol” love last?

Tune in to “American Idol” every week to find out!

American Idol Audition

The American Idol frenzy continues in Dallas — this time at the luxurious W Hotel. Hundreds of second-round contestants lined up outside the Victory Park hotel on Thursday morning. It was not immediately clear if contestants would actually be trying out before judges today.

Idol publicist Jill Hudson said by phone on Thursday that the judges aren’t scheduled to arrive in Dallas until sometime Friday and that tryouts will occur over the weekend.

In July, more than 10,000 people braved the heat for daylong tryouts at Texas Stadium. But unlike the first round, this stage of the tryouts will be closed to the media and the general public, Ms. Hudson said, adding that contestants have been instructed not to talk about whether or not they will advance the third round.

The American Idol tryouts will start airing on the Fox network in January.

American Idol Winner

ALBANY, New York: The parent company of the "American Idols Live Tour '07" violated child labor laws during its New York concert dates, according to the state Department of Labor.

The company, 19 Touring LLC, did not have child performer permits for two singers _"Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and Sanjaya Malakar — who were under 18 during the tour's New York dates in August and September.

Sparks is 17. Malakar turned 18 last month, but was 17 during the five performance dates in Rochester, Long Island, Albany and Syracuse.

The company will pay $5,000 in fines.

A spokesman for 19 Touring said that upon arrival in New York, the tour was informed it would need the state certifications. He said company immediately applied for and was granted the permits.

But the labor department said that for the tour's first three New York shows on August 23, 24 and 25, Sparks and Malakar did not have their individual permits. For all five shows, the company lacked the state eligibility certificate, the department said.

An "American Idol" fan who works for the labor department heard the performers were under 18, did some research and turned the information over to department investigators, the department said.

19 Touring did not return calls from The Associated Press on Friday.

This was the first settlement under a state law enacted in 2003 to protect child perfomers.

Under the law, employers who use performers under 18 must register with the state to ensure compliance with all labor and workers' compensation laws. They must also obtain an employment permit for each minor whose services they use.

American Idol on fox

Fox Reality Channel, the only all-reality, all-the-time network, brings back the only awards show honoring reality television and celebrating all of its outrageous moments (and personalities) that kept America glued to their television sets this year. Our own Sanjaya Malakar was nominated in two categories--"Reality Performer of the Year" and "Favorite Loser." To boot, "Idol" had two contenders up for the category of "Favorite Tears"--Paula Abdul and Ashley Ferl, who affectionately became known as "The Crying Girl." Not surprisingly, the talented Ryan Seacrest was nominated for the "Favorite Judge/Host" category. Lastly, "American Idol" was up for the overall category of "America's Favorite Reality Show."

Tune in to the Fox Reality Channel on Saturday, October 13, at 10PM ET/10PM PT to find out who won!

American Idol Finale Audience Off From Last Year

LOS ANGELES—The "American Idol" triumph of 17-year-old Jordin Sparks drew nearly 6 million fewer viewers than last year's finale, in the latest sign that U.S. television's highest-rated show may have finally hit its peak.

According to a final tally from Nielsen Media Research on Thursday, 30.7 million fans watched as the Arizona teenager was crowned the youngest champion at the end of the sixth installment of Fox network's amateur singing contest.

The Wednesday night total is down 16 percent from the 36.4 million who tuned in to see gray-haired soul crooner Taylor Hicks claim victory at the conclusion of last year's competition.

For the season as a whole, "American Idol" was down slightly in average overall audience compared with 2006, and off a bit more in ratings for viewers aged 18 to 49, the key young-adult crowd most prized by advertisers.

That marks the first year-to-year decline in the show's Nielsen numbers since its 2002 inception, despite media hype and Internet buzz this year surrounding two contestants -- the racy photos of Antonella Barba and the wacky-haired sensation stirred by Sanjaya Malakar.

Moreover, the show that has built Fox into a prime-time powerhouse for young viewership has continued to grow steadily older.

Nielsen figures show the median age of "Idol" viewers has risen from 34 to 41 during the past five years, and that viewers over 50 now account for about a third of the show's audience, compared to less than 20 percent in 2003.

Jordin Sparks will be named the new American Idol - if North America's most popular and embarrassing TV addiction really is a singing competition.

Last night, the 17-year-old Arizona native blew her competition, 25-year-old Blake Lewis from Seattle, out of the running with two phenomenal performances which should earn her the Idol crown.

In front of more than 4,000 fans inside Hollywood's Kodak Theatre and millions of viewers around the world, the final two went head-to-head for cheers, votes and words of encouragement from the judges.

Singing three selections - a favourite from the past season, a new pick and the corny Idol song - they both gave it their all in hopes of becoming the next Taylor Hicks or Kelly Clarkson.

Here's how it went.

Round One goes to Blake Lewis.
Lewis picked his favourite song from the past season, Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name. While the performance certainly showed off his mad beat-boxing skills, it was a terrible choice for highlighting his smooth vocals.

Judge Simon Cowell, as always, called it correctly, saying although Lewis shouted the words at times, he killed the song.

"You're not the best singer in the competition, but you are the best entertainer I think we've had," he added.

As for Sparks, she sang Christina Aguilera's Fighter, which the judges agreed was a great vocal performance, but lacked anything extra.

"You were brilliant. It sounded amazing," said Randy Jackson, who felt Sparks won the first round based on her voice, but Lewis stole it based on entertainment value.

Paula Abdul, who apparently had a broken nose, called it a tie, but Cowell spilt the panel's indecision by going with Lewis.

Round two goes to Jordin Sparks.

In a total shocker, Lewis picked a Maroon Five song. This time, with She Will be Loved, he let his vocals shine, but left his personality back stage.

"You sounded great," Abdul told him, before Cowell rang in with his criticism of the song choice. "It was good. It was safe. It wasn't as good as the first song."

Sparks, also remaining tightly in the conventional box, chose Martina McBride's A Broken Wing, which earned her rave reviews on an previous Idol episode. Once again, she hit it out of the park, wowing the fans in the Kodak Theatre with her insane voice.

"That was flawless. I think better than the original," said Jackson.

Added Cowell, "Now that was good."

Round three goes to Jordin Sparks.

Painful is the only word to describe Lewis' performance of this season's cheesy Idol song, This is My Now, written by two guys from Seattle. It's not that he messed up the lyrics or cracked his voice, he just had difficulty singing a sappy ballad that has nothing to do with the kind of music he'll eventually record.

"I thought that was a little odd," said Cowell, as Lewis nodded in agreement. "I think we have to judge you tonight primarily on your first two performances."

Sparks, on the other hand, seemed a perfect match for the emotional tune.

"You just wiped the floor with Blake on that song," Cowell told the tearful singer.

But it was Jackson who truly summed up the night. "You were the best singer tonight. You deserve it all."

The two-hour American Idol final result's show airs tonight on Fox and CTV. tara.merrin@sunmedia.ca

American Idol - Season 6 - Finals

Week 1 - 13 March 2007 with special guest Diana Ross, she performed Diana Ross' song "If We Hold On Together" from the Land Before Time series. All three judges were impressed with her stellar vocal performance, and even went as far as saying that she had earned herself a spot in the "three-girl race" with fellow competitors Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle.
Week 2 - 20 March 2007 with special guest Lulu, Sparks sang "I (Who Have Nothing)", first made popular by Ben E. King in 1963, and also recorded by Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones. A reviewer on EW.com called her performance "powerful" and "passionate", ranking it one of the top-20 Idol performances of all time.
Week 3 - 27 March 2007 with special guest Gwen Stefani, Jordin performed "Hey Baby", originally performed by No Doubt in 2001.
Week 4 - 3 April 2007 with special guest Tony Bennett, Sparks sang "On a Clear Day". She received fairly positive reviews from the judges. That week it was announced that she had been voted in the top 3 alongside Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle.
Week 5 - 10 April 2007 with special guest Jennifer Lopez, Sparks sang "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You", originally recorded by Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine in 1987. She received fairly positive reviews.
Week 6 - 17 April 2007 with special guest Martina McBride, Sparks sang "A Broken Wing". After a standing ovation from the audience and positive reviews from Judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, Simon said that it was the first time he had believed that "based on that performance, you [Jordin] could win American Idol." During the results, Jordin was placed in a group alongside Chris Richardson and Phil Stacey, which later was revealed to be the safe group of the night.
Week 7 - 24 April 2007 during the Idol Gives Back special, Jordin sang "You'll Never Walk Alone." Judge Randy Jackson said “I think that’s one of the best vocals by any contestant ever on this show, ever in six seasons, and it’s from someone that’s seventeen years old.” On the results show the following night, after Ryan Seacrest had gone through all the contestants but her and Chris Richardson, he announced that Chris was safe. He mentioned how it was "extremely shocking" that the results turned out like this, but it turned out to be a twist as Jordin was also safe. Because it was a charity night, nobody was let go. Instead, the votes from this week would be added to next week's votes, and it will eliminate not one contestant, but two contestants.
Week 8 - 1 May 2007 with special guest Bon Jovi, Sparks sang "Livin' on a Prayer". She received mixed reviews for her performance. Randy said that she had pitch problems during the lower notes of the song, and Simon even went as far as to say it was "terrible" and on the verge of shrieking. After a combined total of Weeks 7 and 8's votes, Jordin survived elimination night. Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson were voted off that week.
Week 9 - 8 May 2007 with special guest Barry Gibb, who was the lead singer of the Bee Gees, Jordin performed "To Love Somebody". Gibb said Jordin sang the song better than anyone he had ever seen. The three judges all agreed that it was the best performance and vocal so far for the night. Jordin then sang "Woman in Love", which was not received as well. Randy and Paula agreed that it wasn't her best and was slightly pitchy. Simon went so far to say that she was too pageant-y and old-fashioned, and said that "you are 17, Jordin" to remind her to stay young.
Week 10 - 15 May 2007 Jordin first sang Rose Royce's "Wishing on a Star" which was Simon's choice and received good reviews from Paula and Randy but a bad review from Simon, who did not like the arrangement. She also sang Donna Summer's "She Works Hard For the Money" which recieved good reviews by all three judges. Lastly, she sang Shirley Bassey's "I (Who Have Nothing)" which received very good reviews from Randy and Paula but Simon didn't like the song choice.
Week 11 - 22 May 2007 Jordin's first song of the night was Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" and received good reviews. She also sang Martina McBride's "A Broken Wing" and for her last performance Scott Krippayne & Jeff Peabody's " This is My Now" which got a standing ovation. That next night, she was declared the "American Idol". She is the fourth winner to never have been in the bottom three or two during the final twelve, after Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks.

Jordin advanced to the final rounds.

Jordin Sparks - Audition

Jordin Sparks first auditioned in Seattle, Washington. She was featured in the audition episode aired on January 17, 2007. Sparks sang "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion. Jordin Sparks - Career

Sparks appeared on the January 17, 2007 broadcast of American Idol, earning a "gold ticket" and the right to appear in the Hollywood Round. American Idol judge Randy Jackson, made the offhand prediction that "Curly hair will win this year," which may have been made in reference to Sparks. Before going on to American Idol, she won Arizona Idol. In 2006, Sparks was one of two winners who won the Phoenix Torrid search for the "Next Plus Size Model." She was flown to California where she was used in a number of Torrid ads and promotional pieces. A full-page ad for Torrid featuring Jordin ran in the December 2006 issue of Seventeen magazine. Sparks finished second in 2004 at the Music in the Rockies national competition for aspiring Contemporary Christian Music artists. In 2004, Sparks appeared in America's Most Talented Kids twice, winning in her first appearance. She was one of seven to appear in a special championship edition of the show. This appearance followed two noted auditions in 2003, one with American Juniors and the other, Star Search. Sparks has performed the national anthem at various sporting events, notably for the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. She has also sung in such events as Country Thunder, a country music venue. She has appeared with Alice Cooper (in his 2004 Christmas show) and has twice toured with Christian contemporary singer Michael W. Smith. Smith has shown support of Sparks by encouraging Idol viewers to vote for her on his website. In 2003, at the age of thirteen, Sparks recorded a five-song album titled For Now, working with Matthew Ward, a legendary Christian music artist, and Gary Leach, an engineer who has worked on several of Leann Rimes' albums. She appeared in a compilation album titled Live at Mr. Lucky's in 2004. As an actress, Sparks has appeared in several plays, recently starring in a dual role as characters Deborah and Bea in Magdalene at the Plumbline Theater in Franklin, Tennessee. American Idol betting odds - Chris Sligh early favorite

Several factors seem to make Chris Sligh early favorite to win the 2007 American Idol edition. Randy Jackson hinted in a media conference call that the eventual winner may be someone that auditioned in Birmingham, but maybe not from Birmingham. Chris Sligh is from Greenville, SC and was auditioned in Birmingham.

For his Birmingham audition, Chris Sligh sang “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal. After his audition, Paula Abdul stood up, applauded, and told Chris that she liked him very much. Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell agreed and quickly put Chris through to Hollywood.

What could be mere speculation is apparently taken very seriously by American Idol handicappers and odds makers. Sligh opened at BetCRIS.com (Visit Web site here) as early favorite to win American Idol Season 6. Sligh's current odds to win AI6 is +450 (Betting $100 would pay $450 if he wins the contest).

Chris seems to be motivated. “I really want to make David Hasselhoff cry." Chris said referring to how David Hasselhoff cried when Taylor Hicks won American Idol 5

American Idol Judge Declares She's Never Been Drunk

After much rumors and speculations about Paula Abdul’s “erratic” behavior, the American Idol judge spoke to Us Weekly magazine in the Feb. 16 issue.

"I've never been drunk. I have never done recreational drugs," says Abdul. "Just look at my 20-year career. Tell me someone who is into partying or doing drugs that could have done that."

Moreover, she expresses her professionalism and passion for the hit show. Abdul has been with American Idol for five years now and has previously signed a deal for the show through 2008. "I have never missed a live show…Even when I had surgery on my hand I left my hospital bed to go to the show," says Abdul.

She denies the countless lies and false speculation over her 20-year career and does not take the rumors too seriously. "I'm squeaky clean. I've worked my ass off my entire life. (But) being involved in the show causes people to question everything," adds Abdul.

Jackson denies 'American Idol' reports

Michael Jackson has denied claims that he will be appearing on American Idol.

Recent reports claimed that the Thriller singer would join the show to mentor contestants before they performed some of his biggest hits in a special episode.

"There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that Michael Jackson is going to appear on American Idol," Jackson's representative Raymone Bain told Access Hollywood. "He has signed no agreements with anyone."

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe also denied the claims: "It's not true. It's just not true. We won't be seeing him."

However, Lythgoe did promise fans that they could expect exciting news in the next few weeks, promising "the biggest thing to happen to Idol in five years".
