Melinda does her bit for Zambia

THIS story is a bit of an old news item but I feel it still bears recounting since it's my favourite Idol 2007 contestant, Melinda Doolittle.

Towards the end of last June, after American Idol Season 6 came to its conclusion, Melinda visited Africa for the first time.

It was part of the Network's Idol Gives Back project. Melinda was part of the group that went to Zambia to distribute bed nets to those who sorely needed them.

It was a four-day trip and the proceeds from the Idol Gives Back telethon proceeds were used to buy 500,000 bed nets for those Zambians who were in danger of suffering from malaria.

Melinda was beside herself with joy as she toured the country with some people who really cared for these needy people. It is believed that Melinda sang Amazing Grace to an audience while she was there.

Here's what she has to say about her trip to Zambia:

"Just $10 buys a bed net, which can protect a family for up to five years,” she says of one of the ways donations are used. “For the children of Africa, it can be the difference between life and death. I hope Idol fans begin to realize how easy it is to prevent malaria and how much of a difference even a small donation can make."

Well said, Melinda. That's my girl!
